How to Get Your Car for Winter

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, November 12, 2013

If you are living in an apartment in Raleigh, NC you know we may get snow. Regardless of if we get that potential snow or not, winter is fast approaching. During the cold weather months, it is important to get your car ready for the winter. Here are some tips on how:

1. Oil change. Your car’s oil should have the right viscosity for your vehicle for this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as it gets colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your engine lubricated.

2. Wipers. Replace your windshield wiper blades. Generally, they work effectively for one year. While you are at it, fill up your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. Have your heater and defroster checked to be sure they are working properly so your windshield will be clean and clear.

3. Battery. Cold weather affects your car battery. Make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free. If your battery is more than three years old, be sure it can hold a charge.

5. Tire pressure. Your tires have to be inflated properly for the best possible traction as you drive, and traction is jeopardized in wet, snowy or icy conditions. The air pressure in your tires drops as the weather gets colder, so have them checked now.

6. Antifreeze. You should have a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water inside your radiator. This will prevent the mixture from freezing even at very cold temperatures.

7. Prepare an emergency kit. Have a safety/emergency kick in your trunk, especially for winter road trips. It should include: a blanket, extra boots and gloves, an extra set of warm clothes, extra water and food, including hard candies, an ice scraper, a small shovel, a flashlight, windshield washer fluid, windshield wipers, flares, jumper cables, a tool kit, a tire gauge, a spare tire with air in it, tire-changing equipment, a first-aid kit, and paper towels.

8. Keep the gas tank as full. Gas condenses, which causes water in your tank and lines. Keeping your tank full can prevent the gas lines from freezing, and your gas tank from rusting.
