Listen to What Your Pet Has to Tell You

Joseph Coupal - Monday, May 02, 2011
Listen to What Your Pet Has to Tell You

Your pet may not be able to recite Shakespeare’s sonnets or sing the Star-Spangled Banner, but, believe it or not, your furry, four-legged friend can talk. If you pay close attention, your dog or cat can communicate with you when something is wrong with his health.

Check out this list of common pet health care issues, and learn how to identify when your pet is trying to tell you that something’s wrong.

Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is one of the most common health care problems for dogs and cats. If you neglect brushing your pet’s teeth regularly, bacteria living in the mouth can enter the bloodstream through decaying, infected teeth and gums. The harmful bacteria can cause swelling and bladder infections. Rotten teeth also make it painful for your pet to chew her food and get proper nutrition.

Dental hygiene problems are common, but can be easily avoided with regular brushing and veterinary care. In between vet visits, watch out for the signs of tooth decay. Notice whether:

  • Your pet’s gums bleed when chewing on toys
  • Your pet only uses one side of her mouth to eat food or doesn’t really chew at all
  • Your pet pulls away when you massage her cheeks

These signs may let you know that your pet needs veterinary dental care.

Obesity
Obesity is another of the most common pet health problems. You may be tempted to laugh off Fido’s “big-boned” heft, but obesity can actually cause a number of pet health problems including skin inflammation, heart disease, and diabetes, among others.

Your pet can tell you that he is overweight in a number of ways. If you see a large tummy from his profile view, can’t feel his ribs, or notice that he is often short of breath, it is probably time to consult veterinary care about a diet plan for your pet. The ideal size of a pet varies by breed, so rely on your vet’s help to determine the proper weight range for your particular pet.

Skin Problems
Skin problems are another of the most common health issues that veterinarians treat. Your pet can tell you that his skin is bothering him if he licks, chews, or scratches a certain spot excessively. Look for skin patches that are red and irritated or have lost fur — these are possible indications that your pet has skin problems, perhaps caused by allergies, bacterial infections, or bug bites. Raw areas on the skin may also indicate an internal problem, such as a break or sprain, as dogs will lick a painful area in an attempt to heal themselves.

Fleas
Fleas are a specific type of pet skin problem that you can also easily identify. More than just a nuisance for you and your family, the presence of fleas can lead to serious health care problems like anemia in pets.

Your pet will tell you if he’s got fleas: he’ll scratch! Also watch for the usual signs of skin problems and check his belly regularly for small, black spots known as “flea dirt.” You may even be able to see fleas crawling on his skin — especially around his hindquarters or neck.

Your Pet’s Demeanor
A pet’s health problems will often manifest as pesky behavior issues that might include destructive chewing, excessive barking, or urinating indoors. Fido isn’t simply being a bad dog when he does these things repeatedly; these behavior problems might be his way of telling you that there’s something wrong with him physically. When behavior problems persist, a vet visit may be a good idea to determine whether there’s a health issue behind the bad behavior.

Also keep in mind that a pet may “act out” when her routine is altered or she gets over-excited. As you live with a pet, you will come to recognize the differences in the clues that your pet’s behavior tell you.

How to Listen to Your Pet
The key to identifying pet health care issues is to pay close attention to your pets. Pay special attention to each animal every day, and watch for any sudden changes in a pet’s behavior. Be open to listening to what your pet has to tell you about his health; he’ll also be able to communicate to you when he feels great!

Boot Camp Fitness: Get in Shape!

Joseph Coupal - Monday, February 21, 2011
Boot Camp Fitness: Get in Shape!

Boot camp fitness might sound like grueling army exercise, but it’s actually the hottest fitness trend in the nation. Rooted in military basic training philosophy, boot camp combines a variety of exercises to help you drop extra pounds, increase strength, boost cardiovascular efficiency and — most importantly — learn to stick to a fitness routine.

What to expect

Boot camp sessions usually last 4-6 weeks and take place outdoors to allow for working out in a variety of environments. Boot camps are usually limited to small groups of roughly a dozen participants in order to facilitate working together, challenging each other, and making new friends.

Typical boot camp programs get participants together to train for one hour a day, 4-5 days a week. The workout generally starts with a warm-up, such as walking or jogging. Then, the exercise moves into strength training activities such as push-ups and squats. These activities are interspersed with competitive games and cardio training to get hearts pumping. The last few minutes are designed as a cool down to bring heart rates back to normal.

Variety is the key to boot camp workouts, and trainers mix up the activities every day to keep participants interested and motivated. Most camps track individual progress, so you’ll stay inspired to reach your fitness goals.

Why It Works

Boot camp sounds tough, so why is it so popular?

The variety of exercises experienced and new friendships developed make boot camp a fresh and fun fitness option. The benefits of boot camp fitness go beyond the basic health bonuses of exercise. The experience provides a group environment for trying new activities. This social aspect of small group training helps campers stay on track, in part because of group morale. Training with a coach is also a great motivator, helping participants set fitness and nutrition goals, and accomplish them.

Boot camp stresses developing a routine that will make personal exercise a habit, long after the boot camp session is over. Many people find themselves signing up for a short-term boot camp experience and loving it so much, however, that they continue with boot camp training.

Find Your Group

Boot camps are available in nearly every city in the United States. Simply do a Google search for the keywords “boot camp” along with your city name, and you should be able to find one. Franchise boot camp businesses run locations across the country. Look for a group where you think you’ll feel comfortable with the other campers, as camps vary from co-ed groups to women-only sessions to senior citizen groups. Because the camaraderie of the experience is so intense, many campers have so much fun together that they sign up for future sessions as a team!

Local Parks and Recreation departments often offer boot camps at nearby parks. The fitness industry has also joined the boot camp brigade; you can typically find a boot camp session at your local gym. Your apartment community might have a boot camp organized in your neighborhood, or you might take the initiative and start one yourself. One of the best ways to get connected to a cool camp is to ask friends to join with you.

The bottom line on boot camp fitness is that the experience will push your fitness limits. Consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise program, but with the okay, go ahead and give it a try — you may find that six weeks of intense fitness begins a lifetime of better health for you!

Valentine's Day History

Joseph Coupal - Monday, February 14, 2011
Valentine's Day History

It was originally known as St. Valentine's day and shortened to Valentine's Day over time, but the sentiment remains the same. It's a day of celebrating love and affection between one another. The day is named after an early Christian martyr named Valentine and was first associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages, when courtly love was popular.

The date derives its name from several Christian martyrs from the early hundreds, AD. There were several different martyrs that the name was taken from and at the time they had no romantic leanings. One specific Valentine is said to have been martyred in Africa on February 14th and that's where the date came from. The romantic aspect of the holiday comes from Geoffrey Chaucer who wrote, "For this was Saint Valentine's Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate." These words were included in a poem that honored the engagement of teenagers King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia.

Critics mistakenly assumed he was referring to St. Valentine's Day of February 14th, although that is not a time when birds would be mating. In his text, Chaucer makes it seem like it it's an old tradition, although it doesn't appear to have existed prior to his writing it.

It seems only just that the city of love, Paris, adopted a High Court of Love on February 14, 1400. This was run by women on the basis of their poetry reading ability or the earliest written valentines. The holiday flourished and England embraced the celebration with the forming of factories that assembled paper valentines.

While the earlier forms of valentines were hand written poems, they eventually gave way to the manufactured forms. From paper valentines to gifts such as chocolates, flowers, and other romantic gifts, the traditions surrounding Valentine's Day have blossomed like the roses so popular on that day. It is estimated that 190 million valentines are sent each year in America alone, mostly among children. Although it's jokingly called, "Singles Awareness Day," it's still a time for all people to remember to express to their loved ones their un-dying love.

Tips for Saving Money on Prescription Drug Costs

Joseph Coupal - Monday, January 31, 2011
Tips for Saving Money on Prescription Drug Costs<

Tips for Saving Money on Prescription Drug CostsIn 2007, Americans spent $287 billion - yes, billion - on prescription drugs. (In 1993, they spent a fifth as much.) Odds are you’d rather contribute a little less to that rising figure. Here are some tips to help you spend less money on your prescription drugs.

Inquire About Alternatives

As your doctor recommends meds for you, don’t be afraid to ask, “How much will these cost me?” You may find that there are less expensive alternatives available, such as generic versions of medications.

Doctors are aware that patients who can’t afford prescribed medicines may stop taking them altogether. As you strategize ways to save money on your prescription costs, remember that you must first run any potential medicine changes by your doctor.

Know your Insurance Options

One way you can help your doctor help you is to show up with a copy of your health insurance’s formulary, or list of covered drugs. Your doctor likely won’t know how much a particular drug is going to cost on your drug plan. With the formulary as a reference, your doctor can assess your insurance’s preferred type of drug, and hopefully make the most economical recommendation to you. Look online to download the information from your health insurer’s Web site; if you can’t find it there, call the customer helpline.

You can also compare the cost of a “name-brand” pill with its generic equivalent. Your doctor may specify to use the generic equivalent, which is often cheaper. In some cases, however, you can’t substitute the generic for a name brand. (You should be able to discuss this with your doctor.)

Look for Assistance

Your doctor’s office may also be able to tell you about programs run by pharmaceutical companies to help patients afford their drugs. (For example, see Pfizer’s Helpful Answers program, which can help with expensive prescriptions, such as the stop-smoking drug Chantix.) You may also be able to get free samples from your doctor.

Once you have a prescription in hand, you can do some shopping to find the best place to buy your drugs. Some states, such as Michigan and Florida, have Web sites where you can compare prices on many standard drugs at pharmacies within the state. If you don’t have such a resource, call around: the same drug may be filled at different prices at different drug stores.

If you don’t need the medicine right away, you can also try shopping online. The Mayo Clinic publishes some tips for ordering from online pharmacies. Make sure you have access to a licensed pharmacist, and buy only from reputable outlets.
